The origins of EPT
DESIGN date back to the 1950’s when Bob Eriksson and Owen Peters teamed up as winning entrants of a design competition sponsored by Sunset Magazine. With degrees from USC and Iowa State respectively, they were amongst the vanguard of young landscape architects shaping the postwar culture of Southern California. Their work harnessed the excitement that was unfolding as the region experienced explosive growth…fusing it with the indoor/outdoor lifestyle made possible by the sublime California locale.
From the official beginning in Pasadena in1962 the firm took on a broad spectrum of project types and scales and worked alongside stellar architects, developers, homeowners, institutions, and municipalities to create places that married sensitive design with precise craftsmanship. Dave Thoms, an early staff member, grew quickly into a full partner. Richard Vanderwood joined the practice several years later and was instrumental in opening and growing our Orange County studio. Together, the offices have been great places to learn the craft of the profession and have served as a training ground for a long list of talented practitioners. The balance of design with technical excellence, along with the familial atmosphere of the studios are cornerstones of the legacy of excellence laid by the founders…foundational elements that remain a constant with EPT
The founders retired in the mid-1990’s and Ric Vanderwood retired in 2015 after forty years with the firm. We are indebted to their legacy of thoughtful work, mentorship, and service to the profession. Upon that legacy we’ve been fortunate to build our present and future defined by continued evolution, growth, thoughtful work, and stellar clients.
